The International Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) announced the Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast-OEM Perspective at the annual American International Semiconductor Exhibition (SEMICON West). )’S total sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment will reach 63.2 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 6% from 2019’s 59.6 billion U.S. dollars. Revenue in 2021 will show strong double-digit growth, setting a historical record of 70 billion U.S. dollars.

SEMI pointed out that this wave of strong spending is driven by the growth of multiple semiconductor industry categories. Among them, fab equipment (including wafer processing, fab facilities, and mask equipment) is expected to grow by 5% in 2020, and then benefit from The recovery of memory expenditure and the large investment in advanced processes and the Chinese market will increase by 13% in 2021; and the foundry and logic process expenditures, which account for about half of the total sales of wafer manufacturing equipment, will also be maintained in 2020 and 2021 Steady growth in single digits. DRAM and NAND Flash memory expenditures in 2020 will exceed the level of 2019, and the growth rates of these two memory categories in 2021 will also exceed 20%.

Assembling and packaging equipment continues to grow thanks to advanced packaging technology and capacity deployment. It is expected to grow by 10% in 2020, reaching US$3.2 billion, and will still grow by 8% in 2021, reaching US$3.4 billion. The semiconductor test equipment market is expected to achieve a remarkable growth rate of 13% in 2020, and the overall test equipment market will reach 5.7 billion U.S. dollars. In 2021, it is also expected that the 5G demand will continue to grow.

In terms of regions, China's mainland and Taiwan, as well as South Korea, are the leading markets in terms of equipment spending in 2020 and 2021. Driven by the strong spending on foundry and memory by domestic and overseas semiconductor manufacturers, Mainland China has leapt to the top of the total spending on semiconductor equipment in 2020 and 2021. This year's equipment spending in Taiwan, China will be slightly revised after a sharp growth of 68% in 2019. It is expected to rebound in 2021, with a rebound of 10%, making Taiwan of China the second place in equipment investment.

South Korea will surpass its performance in 2019 and rank third in semiconductor equipment investment in 2020, making the region the third largest semiconductor equipment spending country in 2020. South Korea’s equipment spending is expected to grow by 30% in 2021, fueled by the recovery of memory investment. Most other regions tracked by SEMI for a long time have the opportunity to show growth in 2020 or 2021.

The following figure is expressed in units of a market size of USD 1 billion:
